That liberals are openly questioning Israel’s likelihood of survival should, ironically, give friends of Israel reason to relax. From environmental catastrophe to the effectiveness of welfare programs for inner city families, liberals are notoriously bad about predicting the future.

And yet, as the only stable democracy in the Middle East turns 60, and as she enjoys a level of prosperity and internal stability unprecedented in its history, Israel has rarely faced greater uncertainty.  The increasingly likelihood of a nuclear Iran has introduced a whole new level of instability into a region not known for its genial methods of conflict resolution.  The increasing oil wealth of Israel’s hostile neighbors means millions of unaccounted dollars are now being funneled into the hands of unpleasant people. The increasing attractiveness of extreme forms of Islam among Arab youths obviously doesn’t bode well for the nation that ideology is committed to destroying.  Meanwhile, anti-Semitism has become more fashionable in elite society than any time since kristallnacht.

And yet… Israel shows no signs of going anywhere.  Its birthrate is higher than the United States, a sign of great social optimism despite obvious hardships.  Its economy continues to grow. Its citizens have now lived through another war with one of their belligerent neighbors and show no signs of weakening resolve.  If anything, the current generation of Israelis has shown even more pluck and determination than the last.  For this, Israel and Israelis should not only be congratulated and admired – they should feel a constant embrace from the United States, its leaders, and its people.

Someone has apparently forgotten to pass this information along to Senator Barack Obama.  In an interview with The Atlantic, the presumptive Democrat presidential nominee called Israel a “constant wound … a constant sore [that] does infect all of our foreign policy.”  On one level, this is traffic-stoppingly stupid.  What’s wrong with this guy?  We’re told ad nauseum he’s the greatest political communicator of his generation, and his idea of a balanced and nuanced position is to compare a threatened ally in a crucial region to a festering, open sore?  It’s no longer an open question as to whether Senator Obama is ready prime time: he’s not.

But far worse than the idiocy of the statement is its offensiveness.  Put simply, would Senator Obama have even flirted with such insulting language were he talking about China, Cuba, or Saudi Arabia?  Meanwhile, in the same “constant sore” interview, Obama reaffirmed his commitment to “opening a dialogue” with regimes that sponsor terrorism, kill Americans, and promise the destruction of Israel.

What can we do about it?  The answer isn't easy and requires our action.  First, we must educate our friends and family on an issue that many voters overlook - how we treat our allies, not just our enemies. Statements like this are beyond irresponsible: they foreshadow the foreign policy of a potential future administration.  Secondly, keep Israel and her people in your prayers and in your political action as they celebrate this great anniversary of Independence.  And third, make sure Senator Obama knows that just because Israel is small and Israelis can't vote for him, that they do have a voice among their allies here in the U.S.  Call his office and let him know how offensive these comments were, and ask him to retract his statement. Here's his number: (202) 224-2854.  And make sure you call - emails are too passive and can easily be ignored, but a phone ringing off the hook is a sign that we're paying attention, and we stick up for our friends.

Distortion
Tom Delay distorting the Truth

Tom, your using the age old tactic of distorting what Obama said to prove that he will not be a strong supporter of Israel. It does not look good for your veracity or honesty. This kind of distortion serves no one and makes you look dishonest.

Seriously Tom
As a former US Congressman, I know that you have reading comprehension skills above that of an 8 year old. IS it that you didn't read that interview yourself, and were just parrotting your buddy Boehner's lies, or are you banking that most of the people who read this post won't have bothered to take the 10 minutes to read the actual interview for themselves? That's pretty weak.

Obama's strength
Regardless of what Obama meant in the interview, his choice of words was disastrous. Obama is running as the candidate who can unite people to a common purpose, based on his ability to communicate.

Using words like "open sore" to describe US support of Israel is diplomatically unacceptable. If this is an example of his brilliant communication skills, and his ability to unite people, then he had better have something else to offer Americans.

Alas, he does not.

I read the whole interview
Despite what McClum and Slim imply, Obama does make it clear that Israel cannot count on his support if he is elected president. The best they can hope for is a tepid endorsement of their theoretical right to exist, while he undermines any practical means of maintaining that existence.

Israel Has US Support
Any US administration would be foolish to not stand with Israel. This country (why is it called a state?) has been our strongest ally in the region; consistent, and dependable.

While we have to show diplomatic decorum, I did not read into any of Obama's words that he would not supprt Israel. In addition, Israel has never threatened to push any of its' neighboring enemies into the sea, or obliterate them. I believe that if Israel is simply left alone, the region would stabilize on its own.

Until then, we pray for the peace of Jerusalem. We will continue to prosper as a nation if we love and support Israel.

BHO has made
a few remarks about Israel and jews. If I were them I would be very scared because BHO could care less. And the sad fact is that if something were to happen to them while BHO was president he would make up some excuse which would basically be equal to saying " be glad its not us" and would not do anything. Its already been proven that BHO has Hamas in his back pocket and people want to vote for this man? This is the saddest day for America.

Israel can fend for themselves
How does are alliance with Israel benefit the USA?

Buh-bye
Over the years I've waited patiently for Israel to solve its problems with the Palestinians, and I've generally been disappointed. When Rabin was assassinated by that smiling boy and the country validated his murder by allowing Netanyahu to ascend to power, that was it for me, the last straw.

Israelis are fond of saying, hey, if you don't like what we're doing, it's okay, we're going to continue doing it, we don't need your approval. Well, fine, suit yourself. See how far you get.

60 years and no peace. Incredible failure.

Prime Minister Gene
Planet Gene, lets play Prime Minister of Israel...

A. Rabin was a long time ago! and a pursuer of peace. Regardless of the stance of the man who killed him (his name was Yigal Amir - it would add credibility if you had said that) why is Amir seen as the the typical Israeli politician or diplomat. He doesn't write domestic or foreign legislation. "The country validated him." No one validated no body. Murder is evil and everyone agrees. Sir you need support for your claims...

B. "Israelis are fond of saying..." I have never heard an Israeli say that to date. Your arguement is skewed in that you have no proof of this.

C. 60 years and no peace is a failure....please locate a map ASAP and familiarize yourself with where Israel is located. Also, Wikipedia some of its wars and get to know them a little (Six Day War, Yom Kippur War, the Intefadas....) I'm not a dancer but I know that it takes two to tango Gene. Israel has gone out on a whim over and over again to attain peace in their region. Ehud Barak almost gave up part of Jerusalem, Arafat denied! Sharon gave up Gush Katif...

Prime Minister Gene, Whats next?
