I explain in today's Washington Times.

When it comes to fundraising, organization and ground game, we Republicans got whipped.

Now, Republicans may criticize Sen. Barack Obama for breaking his promise to accept public funding and play by the established rules, but that doesn't take us too far. We shouldn't kid ourselves: Democrats breaking this precedent had nothing to do with their campaign-finance principles, and everything to do with the fact they could afford to. Mr. McCain could never have competed this fall without the federal funds and, in the end, Mr. Obama simply smothered McCain, outspending him in battleground states by three-to-one, with plenty left over to compete in even Republican-leaning areas.

For years, Republicans outworked Democrats at the polls. Democrats would have opulent fund-raisers with celebrities and would bask in the glow of a lapdog media. Republicans would go out on Election Day and beat them on the ground game. Their guys wrote checks; our guys wrote letters to the editor. They knocked our values; we knocked on doors. They spoke for the people; we actually got out and spoke with the people. Conservative organizations outside the official party apparatus understood their role in a large coalition: organize, energize, and mobilize. And then we won.

Victory is always the hardest thing for a successful political coalition. Economic, social and foreign-policy conservatives unite easily when brought together in opposition to tax-and-spend, pro-abortion, dovish liberals in power. After more than a decade in control of Congress and eight years in the White House, the coalition has worn thin. Conservatives of each of these stripes will always have some complaint to make against the Republican Party. But as odd as it sounds, we need not let our past victories continue to divide us.

Meanwhile, liberals of every sort are in a frenzy to get back into power, and especially to wrest the White House back from President Bush, who liberals have tried to peg as an illegitimate president all along. Democrats have not missed this golden opportunity to unite.

Liberalism's new and impressive network of organizations -- especially fund-raising, grassroots mobilization, and communications -- has left in the dust anything conservatives have ever put together. Organizations like America Votes and ACORN are so closely tied to Democrat politics that they might as well be arms of the party apparatus. The George Soros-funded Shadow Party of organizations run by former Clinton administration officials and liberal leaders -- the Center for American Progress, the Thunder Road Group, MoveOn.org, Media Matters, etc. -- has created a second left-leaning party free from restrictions imposed by official regulations -- including McCain-Feingold.

This liberal infrastructure, which now dwarfs conservatism's in size, scope, and sophistication, will be setting and helping to impose the national agenda for the coming years. The time has come for conservatives to wake up and smell the 21st century.

American politics as we know it ended the day Mr. Obama refused public funds for his presidential bid and unleashed a billion-dollar political giant. National campaigns will now operate not as individual operations designed to elect a single man, but as a cohesive, all-encompassing movement, well funded and certainly prepared for a political coup. In 2012, Mr. Obama -- whether as an incumbent or a seasoned veteran challenger -- will no doubt raise more than $1 billion for his campaign conglomerate. And that's not wrong. It's impressive -- and intimidating.

Between now and then, Republicans must come to terms with their organizational shortcomings and finally become again the kind of dynamic political party that won stirring victories in 1994 and 2000. Our party must expand its organization to include our coalition groups in the ways Democrats have with theirs. The Coalition for a Conservative Majority, an organization I helped start in 2006, is trying to pull conservative organizations back together after too many years of internecine squabbling. Only under conservative government will groups like the National Rifle Association, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and National Right to Life Committee receive a fair hearing of their views; it's time they started working together.

Conservatism's leading donors must look beyond contributing only to traditional channels like the RNC or campaign committees, and open up to also funding outside organizations that can do what the Democrats' Shadow Party is already doing. New resources must be tapped, and just as importantly, coordinated.

And our leaders -- in Congress and in the states -- must develop and communicate a strong, conservative agenda of reform around which conservatives of all stripes can rally with a well-organized political communication strategy.

Luckily, we are still a center-right nation. We still favor conservative approaches to taxes, spending, regulation, foreign policy and traditional values. Americans have never lost their faith in conservatism. We need now a new, 21st-century political coalition to remind them of that fact, and to restore its faith in actual conservatives.

Former Rep. Tom DeLay, Texas Republican, served as House majority leader.

Why you got whipped..
Mr. Delay, I'll tell you why your party was beaten so soundly.
1) 8 years of a President who lied to the American people, presided over one of the most corrupt administrations in history; whose ego got us into the most ill-advised "war" in our history including Vietnam.
2) Fielding a candidate who was out of touch with what Americans care about and lied to us for the sake of a campaign stunt. Remember Letterman?
3) Choosing an unqualified running mate who insulted the intelligence of most women. What was he thinking?
I did vote Democrat but I also voted for a few Republicans locally. My hope is that we can let this partisanship BS go and remember that first and foremost, we are Americans. If our nation goes down the tubes it won't matter what color your skin is or whether you're "red" or "blue"... we're all going to suffer.
Thanks for your time.

Out of touch...
It is this mentality that has people like Tom Delay and his party swept out of Congress. He talks about "talking to the people" and yet the ultimate talk is at the voting booth. May I suggest the former congressman to "listen to the people". Shame on him for pinning the results on money alone. Is he really suggesting that democracy really comes down to how much money one spends? Does it not matter that the landslide results potrait a picture of the public disgusted and fed-up of this very mentality of old school politics? He is a respected leader of his party and one him and the comrades of his party huddle together to figure out what went wrong, here's a hint.....LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE...."In God We Trust" is no longer about the trust on the dollar bill.

Why Republicans Are getting Whipped
Amazing!

To suggest that Republicans were whipped only because campaign finance, organizaton and ground game is like saying Iraq has been more stable solely due to the surge.

Improved stability in Iraq has been realized not just because of the surge but also due to the Sunni Awakening and the cease fire declared by the Mehdi Army.

Republicans got whipped yes, because of campaign fundamentals but also because the policies they implmented and adminstered for the last 8 years. A President with a record low approval rating is proof enough of that.

However, if you think Republicans lost only because of campaign fundamentals that's fine with me. It means you fail to recognize reality and will consequently fail to make the changes your party will require to be competitive in '012.

Frankly I think we're seeing the beginning of the end of the GOP. The demographics of the US are changing significantly and the GOP's failure to respond to this will cause them to lose more and more elections.

DeLay Nails It -- On his Thumb
"Liberalism's new and impressive network of organizations -- especially fund-raising, grassroots mobilization, and communications -- has left in the dust anything conservatives have ever put together."

That's OBAMA'S new and impressive network. I realize that competence has become only a vague concept to the wingnuts. Watch and learn, for the next eight years.

"Luckily, we are still a center-right nation."

You're hardly even a center-right STATE there in Texas. The GOP ran a center-right barely-a-republican candidate and we ran "the most liberal senator in the history of the universe" and we beat the pants off you.

The voting public has seen clearly that conservatives can only talk about conservatism; they haven't the faintest idea how actually to do it. Reagan and both Bushes made all the right noises, but when it came down to running the government, their solution was spend, fail, spend.

When you're out of power, you claim that government can't do anything right, and when you're in power you demonstrate that it's Republican government that can't do anything right.

Why Republicans Got Whipped
You guys got whipped because Americans have finally realized that the GOP is not a centrist party, but a radical group of reactionary hate and fear mongers who have systematically wrecked our economy, our national security and our international reputation in the name of an idealogy that is the western equivalent to radical islamism.

Your personal behavior in destroying the honest balance of power in Texas, among other things, got you where you are today. Enjoy your retirement.

It has NOTHING to do with how much money you did or did not spend campaigning. Until you and the rest of your dying party (of which I have always been a member UNTIL NOW) realize these things, you will continue to get soundly beaten in every election to come. The Real Reasons You're Out
Mr. DeLay,

You and your party continue to misread, underestimate, and sell short the American people, with whom you are firmly and irretrievably out of touch. You think money could have made the difference? Get a clue. We don't care about your money. We're not swayed by any amount you might spend on relentless, tiresome campaign ads and slander.

Here are the reasons I am ashamed I was ever a Republican:

1. Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Alberto Gonzales
2. The "Patriot Act".
3. Halliburton, "Homeland Security," detention camps.
4. Posse Comitatus and Habeus Corpus
5. Utter disregard for Constitutional liberties and American ideals.
6. Failure to represent the American people in favor of limitless aid and support to badly run, predatory businesses and bankers.
7. The thought processes that go into things like the gibberish you've written here.

Sick of Government Catering to the Few
Mr. Delay, I'm moderate Republican, and I'm looking forward to having a government that serves its Constitutional functions again. That means:
- Honoring the separation of church and state rather than acting as if our country is a theocracy (gosh, that might mean funding for stem cell research so our country might have something to sell to the world again...except that they're already so far ahead of us now).
- Fulfilling regulatory functions that will protect little people like stockholders from predatory executives (and uh... maybe we even need a few MORE regulations to prevent award of golden parachutes and outrageous bonuses to those undeserving few who are STEALING from acftual PAYING stockholders.
- Protecting our interests, foreign and domestic. On the foreign side, that would involve thinking and planning for every contingency before moving to start a war, as opposed to jumping in with a "don't confuse me with the facts" attitude. On the domestic side, that means funding for scientific research and development of fusion power - we need the equivalent of a Manhattan Project if we're going to preserve civilization for the long term.

I could keep going, but if you were going to get it, you'd get it by now. I really wanted to vote for McCain - he truly is a maverick and I respect his integrity (minus a few heat-of the-moment campaign blips amd his spokesmodel VP choice). But in the end I think he has a rash personality (and that isn't something that changes much), and we've had enough of rashness in the White House. For me, it simply came down to who would have the intellectual curiosity to look below the surface, the intelligence to find the best path, and who would be able to surround himself with the best thinkers, planners, and doers. So I voted for Obama. It really didn't have anything to do with campaign spending or political machines.

good points Mr. DeLay
Sometimes you eat the bear, sometimes the bear eats you. For conservatives, the bear just ate us, but fortunately in 2 years we will have another chance and even more so in 4 years.

The left will try to squelch our speech. Heaven knows they don't want real substantive debate. Regardless, we will need to put on our big boy pants and get back to the work of enacting our better vision for the country.

That said, the member coalitions need to have a very grown-up talk about our vision. Specifically, the fiscal and social wings of the coalition need to find a vision to which they can both work wholeheartedly. It's too big to discuss in a single comment, but those who care mostly about family/social issues NEED the resources the fiscal wing can bring and those whoe care mostly about economic issues NEED the foot soldiers the social wing brings. If the fiscal wing (dominant here on Townhall) thinks they can come back without those "uneducated rednecks" (paraphrasing their words) in the social wing, they better get used to being in a 30-40% perpetual minority.

Politics in the new millenium is about building a movement in support of a vision and we are going to need a clear vision and all the resources from all wings to work our way back to a majority. We live to fight another day, but we are going to need all our soldiers marching to the same cadence in the next battle.

Re: Sick of Government Catering to the F
Pat, you may be (or have been a moderate Republican), but you are certainly no conservative. All of your reasoning parrots the traditional liberal treatises.

A government that serves its constitional functions does none of the things you mention. Remember, the constition clearly spells out the responsibilities of the federal government. Stem cell funding, preventing golden parachutes, funding for scientific research and fusion power...You could keep going but you would just continue to be more and more wrong.

The powers of the federal government are few and enumerated. None of the items, apart from defense, are within the purview of the federal government as laid out by one of the greatest documents ever composed in the history of the world.

I'm unclear how you came to the conclusion that voting for a blank sheet of paper was the right thing to do. His campaign rhetoric was the complete opposite of his actual, if limited, voting record. Only when he "misspoke" did we get a glimpse of the true Obama. If you support activist government, higher taxes, weak defense, wealth redistribution, and more government control over our lives, then congratulations, I believe you will get exactly what you voted for. I also believe that these very things will ensure a very limited lifespan for liberal control of the government, and will of course, do everything in my limited power to ensure that comes to fruition.

Whipped

We lost and as much as the popular vote was close we were crushed in the Electoral Vote. Good Points Tom. But I also think that there are some bigger reasons. First, Obama was given the White House by the main stream media. Second, we were given McCain by the Media as the Republican nominee. I and many of my conservative friends that actually take time to study the issues didn't vote for McCain. It was Time Magazine and the rest of the bunch that endorsed McCain. Also, Obama took the Hispanic votes which I don't think McCain really sought after. Last, the media made it a point to shame George W Bush so much that we became ashamed to openly declare our party. It is obvious that the media is the problem. We need to elect nominees that stand for what our party believes. We can no longer have the media pick and choose the outcome of our future. I know I am guilty of not doing enough for the Republicans but I will never make the same mistake again.

You libs crack me up
Tom Delay has been out of the HR for several years and when he speaks, you still show up in droves in some sort of pathetic attempt to show him what's what.

In many senses, he's correct. The libs have set up a tremendous network of financial and new media organizations which are very effective, especially with the more tech savvy portion of the voting population. Conservatives haven't quite yet mastered these, instead relying more on talk radio. The problem with talk radio is you are preaching to teh choir. A group that, while obviously important in getting to the polls, is only part of the solution.

Exeye above got more to the heart of it though. Why vote democrat-lite. During and after FDR, repubs went the way of me-too. That's a sure-fire recipe for wandering the desert for another 40 years.

But before you libs get too gleeful, take a good hard look at the county by county map of the US. The vast majority of this country is center-right. Apart from the major metro areas where the libs tend to concentrate, this country is overwhelmingly conservative. They just haven't had enough politicians supporting their views.

you still don't get it
Mr. Delay,

as long as you equate "liberals" with the democratic party, you're going to continue to lose. most democrats do not consider themselves to be liberals, as the term has come to be defined in modern American politics. A liberal is someone who thinks that all the runners in a race should be given a medal for participating, and told that there are no winners or losers. Most democrats think that medals should be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, and if their child dosen't win, they'd tell them to work harder. Thinking of democrats as a bunch of liberals has caused you republicans to be a bunch losers. You need to define what you stand for.

Alex G,

If the repubs refuse to see the light and continue to offer up dem-lite, then they will get what they deserve. They will go the way of the whigs and the conservatives will form a new part in their wake.

I believe when it all comes down to it, most people are pretty sensible, they want a government that is competent but stays out of their way and allows them to pursue their successes and failures as they see fit. The liberal agenda is antithetical to the overwhelming view of the majority of the country. But after 8 years of Bush screwups, me-too republicanism, and a complete vaccuum in the conservative leadership positions within the republican party, it's easy to see why they lost. The funniest part about today is why there is no word from the libs on how their gains were consistently at the low-end of the predictions. No super majority for the house, no filibuster proof majority for the senate. And not a word. The silence speaks volumes.

Your article didn't make one mention of the fact that after the Republican House and Senate takeovers of 1994, you folks decided it was better to 'get along' with your political opponents than it was to stick to your principles. Not one of the items promised in the Contract with America came to pass because you thought it more useful to try and out-Democrat the Democrats so Big Media wouldn't say bad things about you. Your buddies passed Medicare rx drug entitlements (which the senior citizens didn't even want!), allowed Ted Kennedy to author the NCLB Act, added yet another layer of bureaucracy by creating the Homeland Security Dept., decided that amnesty was better than security and most recently decided that nationalizing the banks was the solution to decisions made by people who should not have been loaned cab fare, much less mortgages.

people get stuck in this state but the state is unavoidable. That is what the The Kübler-Ross grief cycle tells us (http://changingminds.org/disciplines/change_management/kubler_ross/kubler_ross.htm). First there is the calm of this relative paradise, a bombshell bursts...

Shock stage: Initial paralysis at hearing the bad news.

Denial stage: Trying to avoid the inevitable.

Anger stage: Frustrated outpouring of bottled-up emotion.

Bargaining stage: Seeking in vain for a way out.

Depression stage: Final realization of the inevitable.

Testing stage: Seeking realistic solutions.

Acceptance stage: Finally finding the way forward.

Anger & bargaining are the reactions I see most on TH. By bargaining I mean blaming the loss on communusts, leftists, socialists, ignorant masses, and the like. The fact is that the neo-con ideas and policies have failed and failed in a huge way. The sooner you stop bargaining and start admitting failure the sooner you can move on to the next stage: depression.

Why Republicans Got Whipped
Mr. DeLay, the GOP got whipped because of a combination of mindless anti-intellectualism and flat out corruption. You, sir, are an example of both of these problems. Mr. "Hammer," we need intellectual conservatism, not ignorance. We need conservatives who read great literature, philosophy, and history, and who can argue with sophistication and eloquence. (William F. Buckley comes to mind) We do not need people like President Bush, who is simply incapable of winning the war of ideas.
Here are some ideas to ponder: First, believing in limited government does not mean being mindlessly anti-government. Being conservative does not mean being anti-science. (News Flash: Evolution happened!) Why don't we trumpet the fact that Frederick Douglass was a Republican when we reach out to African-Americans? (Or does anyone still know who Douglass was!?)

Trust me, the Republican Party's problems go far beyond fundraising. As a teacher, I have watched the party completely lose the hearts and minds of the younger generation. (Do some polling of the 18-30 age bracket and you will be sobered by the results)

I had so hoped that John McCain would lead us out of the morass you and your ilk created, but, alas, he became a POW once again, only this time he was held captive by the yahoo wing of our party. If you can't stand this sort of criticism, then prepare to be the minority party for a long time. Way to go Republicans!!

A Battle for Hearts and Minds
As I see it, the victory was a result of a relentless propaganda war that started with Floridah, proceeded through Katrina, and ended with framing a Democratic scandal at GSE's as a fault of deregulation. Republicans did not offer an equal and opposite force as determined enemies drummed a wartime president into the mud. They offered no reminders of their many accomplishemnts. The contrast with the Clintonistas is stark. Both Clinton and Bush presided over long periods of economic growth culminating in a burst bubble and recession. Yet, Dems always brag about 22 million new jobs etc while Republicans say nothing when better criis management is compared to th Great Depression. The have let the opposition define them.
Republicans also need an urban agenda. Having revitalized NYC and New Orleans they have much more to offer urban dwellers than a man from Chicago with myriad unsolved problems.

It gets pretty bad when you have to get your pep talk from a guy that left Washington in disgrace. If I recall correctly, DeLay got his money not from "talking to people" but by creating phoney crises for Indian casinos and then robbing them blind.

Obama has created a new paradigm - internet fundraising by championing the General Interest. Republicans have long prevailed because they catered to the moneyed special interests, right-wing Christians, oil, auto, and pharmaceutical companies. That was the quickest way to get the campaign $$. Of course there are always strings attached to championing special interests. No problem for the party of "values voters."

However if you campaign for general interests, health care, education, and a clean environment you can appeal to many more people. With a good internet apparatus, you can get financial support.

I question whether the Republican Party will ever be able to recover.

Arrogance...
Ironically, now that the Dems have enjoyed less than 12 hours of power, their supporters on this board are already spewing arrogance and settling into complancy by proclaiming the death of the GOP!

The GOP will regroup under new leadership and begin taking back seats in 2010 and 2012. Now that Bush is done, the Dems will own EVERYTHING that goes wrong. No more blaming Bush or the GOP when something goes wrong. We can finally sit back and watch. Believe me, in 2010, there will be no Obama coattails to rely on and the Democratic wave will have crested (it did this year).

By the way, Obama did not win in a landslide. He got roughly 6.5 million more votes out of nearly 113 million cast. Hardly a death knell for the GOP or a declaration that the DEMS will rule forever. 47% of this country did not vote for Obama even with everything going in his favor. This will certainly be a problem for in 2012 when his ardent supporters and followers that voted for him this year discover that the World has not changed, that problems still exist, and that Obama is a regular politician - not the messiah destined to bring 'change and hope'. Its time for him to put up or shut up...

Mr Delay, you totally missed the mark
It wasn't the money or the media or acorn or their ground game that gave them the victory.

It was the fact that no one has making the case for conservatism, at least not since the contract with america, nor have they defended conservatism. So Obama's leftist ideas went unchallenged.

W. is NOT a conservative and even if he were he is totally incapable of effectively communicating ideas.

On top of that W. seems to think that the President must be above politics and has not fought back against the constant attacks from pelosi, reid and the media. Eight years of unanswered attacks have had an impact.

As conservatives, our mistake was electing W. to begin with and to compound it, we nominated another RINO in McCain. If the republican party does not return core conservative principles they will be a minority party for the foreseeable future.

I hope they learn their lesson.

I must be missing something Mister Virginia Patriot. So just what is it the Democrats and Obama are going to do to fix the Immigration Problem. Please tell us.

This thought: First, we have heard over the past several years that we need the immigrants to do the jobs that most Americans won't do. Then we heard that Americans would do those jobs provided they would be better paid. Then we see the Dems come up for increased minimum wages, and so they are. Now, we still have illegal immigrants doing the jobs Americans won't do even at new minimum wage scale. So what happened to the americans who said they'd do the jobs immigrants are doing now? Obama claims he is going to create jobs for every American, so what happens to the illegals when he does that? Does Obama plan on giving them amnesty just like McCane wanted so they can stay in this country and share the wealth like Obama says he will give to all? Do you think Obama can create enough jobs to make everybody prosperous?

Re: lisa
You need to stop repeating the talking points of the dems as you learned them from the MSM or the so-called conservatives ala Brooks, Parker, etc.

You want to let partisanship go? There's only one way to have unity and that's for one side to capitulate to the other. Are there areas that both sides can agree on? Of course there are, and they should work together in those areas. But in areas where they disagree, partisanship is part of the bargaining process. If you have any chips in your hand, you play them to try and get things the way you want or pieces of what you want. That's the game. Of all the things McCain always said, the bi-partisanship thing was the one that rankled me perhaps the most. Because for libs, bi-partisanship means choosing their way for the sake of "unity" but never going with the conservatives because we're all just hateful and mean-spirited. Well thanks but no, I reject their labels, and I reject compromising my principles. If I don't stand for them, I stand for nothing at all.

To paraphrase a song from a children's show, some of these conservatives are not like the others ones. Some ideologies (i.e., capitalism) are inherently incompatible with others (i.e., social conservativism). Limited government advocates are at cross-purposes to those who would expand the power, scope, and role of government for a particular form of social engineering. Yet you expect these two groups of people to work together.

When two groups of people do not agree on a fundamental philosophy, even if they agree on a nominal result, in the end, over the long run, they simply cannot work together. It was an unstable alliance from the beginning. Fusionism has failed.

Now you have to make a choice as to which branch you are willing to ditch: The capitalists, or the social conservatives.

I actually like McCain and if it wasn't for the trash campaign Bush ran against him in 2000 he would have been president of the US. Oh well. We need moderates, not conservatives, not liberals, moderates. People who are transparent, honest, forth right in their thinking. We don't have that for the most part in any of our elected officials. It's sad. Politics has become basically another wing of Hollywood. You gain fame and fortune in the spotlight of the media and I think that's one big reason people get into politics. True service to one's country would involve sober minded thinking, rational planning, and accountability. Unfortunately the Republican party no longer has any of those traits. Competition is good though. This mule kicking the right suffered will eventually lead to change and hopefully to a more centric attitude. The bipartisan divides in our government need to be mended. Palin was an EXCELLENT choice for VP. If SHE had been at the TOP of the ticket, the Democrats would have lost by an even wider margin than the Republicans did this time. (Do not listen to the mainstream media!)

Those Repugnicants who condemn Palin now need to GET OUT of the GOP. They don't have a CLUE what being a conservative is. It is NOT the party of big-spending Bush and stupid-spending, anti-speech McAmnesty. It is the party of righteous living, freedom loving, small government, independence and self-reliance.

Either embrace the PRINCIPLES of conservatism, or forever cede elections to those soft-hearted, soft-headed sycophants who embrace Obama-like cults of personality and life-long dependence on the nanny state.

I am sure I won't agree with a lot of what he does but that's life. We do what we can to make this country a better place for all and hopefully some good comes out of it. Dear Conservative Friends:

We need to get rid of the Electoral College! It has served its purpose in history, but it is now, in a homogenized America with a McDonald's, a Starbucks, and a Wal-Mart in every nook and cranny of the land, a hopelessly disfunctional and shamefully non-democratic system.

Some Nasty People Here Today
We're always happy to hear the snipping from the nasty left about what our shortcomings are. Your inputs are just priceless (and worthless).

Mr. Delay is correct in his assessment of the Republican machine being vastly outmatched by the current Democrat machine. We need to do a much better job of getting people out into the communities, especially the minority communities, and starting some educational programs on what the Republican party is really about. We need to have vastly improved local effort to get people out, register people to vote, etc.

We also need to figure out as a party what we really stand for. When we come off as Democrat-lite, we lose. When we go out and talk about smaller government, less regulation, lower taxes, increased self-reliance, and greater opportunity for success, we can't lose.

We also need to stop taking the democrat crap. When black panther party members show up at the polls with night sticks to prevent people from voting, we need to show up with baseball bats to kick their butts out (since the police seem impotent to do anything about it). When democrats send their Acorn members into a community, we need to send a similar number of people out into the community to represent us. Every time they cheat, we need to prosecute and publicize it. We need to do a much better job of fighting back, we're not at at the "country club" anymore. We're at war with these pukes.

Electoral College
For those of you out there that show up at the end of every election and start complaining about the difference between the popular vote and the electoral college results, I would just say this; our founding fathers where men of incredible courage and intellect, and they created something that has been incredibly special and rare on this planet in our society that has managed to stay together for nearly 250 years. If you think that you can put together a better deal then they did, please go create your own country somewhere else. The founding fathers had some very specific reasons to set up the system that we have, and that is to avoid the tyranny of the majority. They realized that a "popular" vote would tend to produce people that appealed to the big city people, but those who lived in more rural communities would be less represented by this. The electoral college is an attempt at balancing these forces and has been pretty successful so far, even if some of us are not overly happy with some of the outcomes, the system itself works fine.

Moreover, those who called Palin an embarrassment fail to consider the alternatives. If McCain had picked Mitt Romney, the narrative would have been how much they hated each other; Tim Pawlenty, and crowds would have remained in the low hundreds. Money talks, ideas talk louder
Clearly, anyone who thinks that the huge disparity in money spent didn't make a difference needs to re-think their ability to reason.

On top of that, the abject failure of the MSM to actually examine who Obama is, what he has done, who he has chosen to associate with in his rise to power, or any other aspect of his life for that matter, was akin to him having spent even more than he spent on the free advertising. (We knew more about Palin's "issues" within three weeks than we learned about Obama in two years from the MSM.)

But, the bottom line is the candidate. McCain not only a lukewarm conservative, he was old. Not only was he old, he looked and sounded old in comparison to Obama. On top of that, his inability to deliver a good speech diminished him in comparison to one who could. (I'm constantly amazed at how someone is able to rise to the level of a Senator or the nominee for President of a major political party without the ability to communicate effectively and persuasively.)

We don't need new ideas. We need new blood. New blood with the ability to communicate conservative ideals in a persuasive manner.

You lost, sir, because for the past 14 years you've shown no ability to govern. You lost because you see winning as the end of the process rather than the beginning. Since 1994 you have either ignored or vilified the 50% of the electorate who disagree with your narrow-minded, theocratic arrogance. You were warned in 2006, and you chose not to heed that warning. The results of Tuesday's election were of you own making and not due to your perceived lack of organization. You lost because of who and what you are, not what you failed to do. For the past 8 years your party has offered nothing but fear, hatred, secrecy and division. In my 40+ years of voting I've usually had to choose between the lesser of two evils, but this time I saw a clear choice between good and evil. Rocketeer, I'm sure you're fully aware that the United States Constitution has a built-in amendment feature to bring the document up to snuff when needed. It was not written in stone. If we want to remove the Electoral College, all we have to do is persuade the likes of North Dakota that it's in their best interest to do so. That can't be too hard. Maybe if more red states turned blue we'd get some action.

I don't have to start another country if I don't like the U.S. Constitution. All I have to do is persuade other people that it should be amended.

The failure is the far right conservatives hatred of Christian values. We saw proof when Harriet Miers was nominated? Cons got torches and pitchforks and chased her away. Her flaw? Miers is a Christian.

Tom DeLay, conservatives who want godlessness first and foremost need not apply within the GOP. Since your conservatives are the ones who betrayed the GOP, they will make the first concession. If you want to work to fix the GOP? Lets do it.

So let me get this straight. McCain runs an incoherent campaign, is outspent by Barry by a 3 to 1 margin, the country hates Bush and the Iraq War, and Mac leads with 30 days to go until the economy crashes in large part due to Barry and Chris Dodd failing to oversee Fannie Mae after getting huge payouts, and this costs him the election. And the Socialists think this is a mandate ??????

If the Left is represented by the morons on this site, then I have dramatically underestimated the dangerous impact of the overexposure to Teachers Unions in our public schools. Conservatism is what this country was founded on and it is what has made us the preeminent power in the world today. Conservatism was not rejected –exit polls found that 65% of Americans don’t want their government redistributing their income, do want to drill in ANWAR, do want Federal spending reduced, and do want a strong military to defend the country.

Barry will have to accomplish something positive for the first time in his life, but the early returns aren’t promising. Here is the Scoreboard:

- The Dow plunged 486 points the first day after the election;

- The Dow is over 350 points down today;

- The Russians immediately declared they would place missiles near Poland to combat our planned missile defense system and to test this dangerous neophyte;

- He is talking about John Kerry as Secretary of State ?????;

- Rahm Emanuel, the most venal of Dems in Congress is appointed Chief of Staff (so much for reaching across the isle and non-partisanship);

- Democrat Barney Frank states he wants to cut the military by 25%;

- Democrat George Miller states he wants to “nationalize” all 401(k)’s and have them administered by Social Security;

- As his first Presidential directive Obama will eliminate secret union ballots.

The Left now has to govern and America is watching. If they hold true to form they will be stepping all over their d-i-c-k-s before you know it. Keep smoking your bong pipes Lefties and before you know it Barry will be after your income too !!!

Now its your turn to complain
Since before the election in 2000, the left was feverishly wanting GW to be impeached, if he won, for reasons yet to be discovered. That was the mindset.

For the past several months the left has invented things to accuse McCain of, Palin winked at the camera and the left said she has a serious eye disorder, it wasnt a wink. The media was too powerful to overcome, they saw deep corruption (and unlimited potential for more) in the Obama camp and said hey these are our kind of people.

But now its the duty of us McCain voters, each of us should make a blog and use it (keep it private) or at least use a notepad and pen and make notes about what outrages the Obama regime perpetrates and notable world events. Do it each day, each time news happens, note it. Anytime the mainstream media glosses a story, note it. Yes its boring but important.

The president elect and staff are Marxist minded, that means freedom of speech must go away.

The new coalition
Tom D, you wrote "Americans have never lost their faith in conservatism. We need now a new, 21st-century political coalition to remind them of that fact, and to restore its faith in actual conservatives.
"

Yes I fully agree and say this must be the top priority. I would like to hear the complaints and whinings and excuses from the disassociated group of us folks from far right conservative, republican, independent, Reagan democrat, etc. Because blame assignment, anger, resentment are at the peak so lets strike while the iron is hot.

We can start with a workshop, listing the ideas and goals, identify and solidify the direction then seek to find roadblocks, division and disagreement. The workshop concludes with findings, facts and recommmendations. Dont say what then, only defeatists would say that.

this is so true. The deck was stacked against GOP this election cycle and the media fanned that flame.

But then again the democrats are basking in a win finally. How soon they forget how shocked they were when Pres Bush won in 2004.

But as for this blog. I think there is a vital point missing that the GOP lost its way and set this all up for the left to swoop in. The GOP has to look long and hard on the big government ideals it moved too after 2000. We the people will comeback the GOP when the GOP gets back to its founding principles.

I just finished up the 1964 Reagan speech for goldwater. And it is amazing how it fits at this time. I think the GOP and all the "republican" pundits need to listen to it to get a grip.

To my left friends posting in this thread. I have a question does it make you feel good to name call to people you disagree with?

Dont blame the GOP
Charles, you said "But as for this blog. I think there is a vital point missing that the GOP lost its way and set this all up for the left to swoop in. The GOP has to look long "

So many on the far right will say: The GOP lost its way. and then: When the GOP fixes itself we conservatives might think about voting GOP again?

This mentality is what made the far right sit on their hands and not vote in 2006, giving us massive financial hardship (among other things democrats did)

And then in 2008 the Primadonna mindset of whining far right conservatives once again let the democrats take even more power with the goal of ruining the nation to make the GOP come running back to conservatives.

So to get their way? Conservatives now have back stabbed the GOP once again giving us a Marxist president elect who is starting the staffing process. It looks to be a bitter and tough road.

Now instead of demand standing conservatives went out to sink the ship and the nation be damned. And NOW you want to say its the GOP's fault?? Its the conservatives' fault for what the extremist left will do, the GOP should now say no conservative need apply. But being equally as childish as conservatives is not the professional, ethical thing to do.

Its time to fix things within the GOP, and form the new coalition but this massive betrayal by conservatives will not simply go away.
Charles writes: Thursday, November, 06, 2008 9:40 PM
Brad-
I see it a bit different- the GOP has since 2000 to be more moderate- and it failed. You cannot deny all that was done to make ourselves look like the nice guy who wants to play fair and get along has got them completely booted out back to only having a thread of hope to do anything.

This should speak volumes to what is at hand. Let me put it this way- last night I spoke with my sister in law who is a liberal. We ended up at socialism at 1 point and she said " what is wrong with trying socialism". My jaw dropped. She honestly did not know the pit falls. But Instead of railing on socialism I explained the core less government less regulations less taxation point and the light went on. She has never really heard that before. For that reason I seriously think that if you were to present this and stick to core values and not try and jog to the middle because you think it is the way to get votes you will draw people in.

How Reagan conservatism be anything less then inspiring? Really you as an individual able to not have to rely on big brother for healthcare, having money in your pocket because your job can pay you more because of less taxation and less regulated streamlined government that is there to oversee and not meddle.

So yes I think getting back to the core of less government personal responsibility less taxes individual rights will inspire people as it does all across the globe making people want to come here.

The FACT is Lisa, President Bush did NOT lie to the American people. This claim was debunked. However, extremists will not hear the facts. Lisa, the liberal left has sought to portray the Iraq war as the wrong choice, as they did for Vietnam, movies and shows lying about both of these ‘wars’. Tom Coburn, Oklahoma's Senator, defines the problem well. Consider your viewpoint in light of his observations - and I happen to agree. Conservatives find the charge that they have been suddenly expelled from American political life surreal because we have been a minority within the majority, then a minority within the minority, since 1996. Conservatives have been consciously marginalized ever since the new Republican majority decided inconvenient promises like term limits were no longer necessary now that the "good guys" were in charge. And, as far back as 1997, Republican leaders initiated the Republican leadership policy of referring to conservatives as "you conservatives"--a troublesome band best kept outside of the Republican machinery that was busy doing important work like constructing the K Street Project.
While establishment Republicans find solace in complaining about the demands from the right, the record of history shows that virtually every warning and call for internal reform conservatives have offered since 1996 has been vindicated. It was conservatives who indicted the corrupting practice of pork-barrel spending long before sitting members were formally indicted. It was conservatives who warned that budget surpluses would quickly disappear in an environment of out-of-control spending and decimate the Republican brand. It was conservatives who insisted that a culture of oversight was more important to our long-term success than a culture of parochialism.
Therefore, what led the Republican Party to this day was not the application of conservative principles but the abandonment of those principles while hypocritically appealing to those tenets. The past few years have shown a strong correlation between electoral success and fidelity to limited government conservatism. The more Republicans abandoned conservatism, the more voters abandoned Republicans.

Observation on Coburn's Comments.
The principal of fiscal responsibility is the cornerstone issue that was essential to maintaining the GOP's control of Congress. By abandoning this issue, the GOP lost the ability to articulate it's differences with the Democrats on the single most important issue for Americans - which is the economy. Defense and Social values are important, but in and of themselves, cannot win national elections. From 1996 to 2006 the GOP in the House and Senate drifted away from their previous position on this issue. Many of us, by 2004, became concerned and indeed, appalled by this fact.

In the end, the GOP lost this election - not because of Conservatives - but because it had no message on the economy that sounded materially different from the Democrats. And, where it did, it's message lacked credibility because its own history from 1996 to 2006 did not support the message.

McCain tried to stand for certain economic principals - but his party had not stood effectively for those principals for a decade - so his message was not convincing.

And so you, the GOP, my friend, lost the election. Right now, you simply look and sound just the like the Democrats. The GOP could not clearly hang Freddie and Fannie on the Democrats, because a majority of the GOP routinely refused to support legislation to reform them. After all, their constituents were getting home loans because of these agencies - just as those for the Democrats were. It could not hang deficits and spending on the Democrats, because for a decade, it had pursued pork, payouts, and the expansion of the government with the same enthusiasm the Democrats had. From 2000 to 2006, not one single spending bill was vetoed. Not one.

And when it came to the bailout, it was a GOP administration, a GOP Treasury Secretary, and a GOP appointed Fed Chief that wanted it. And McCain, the GOP candidate, supported it.

Differentiate that, my friend.

Kathleen -- The case against Sarah Palin has nothing to do with keeping women barefoot and pregnant, and it is absurd at this point that you bring that up. To the charge that she is "common," however, I plead guilty! We've had a very common man in the White House for the last 8 years, and look where it got us. Sarah Palin is so common, so ignorant, so incurious, so set in her thinking, alarm bells went off almost immediately, and wouldn't cease till the election was history.

Really, Senator McCain, you couldn't have made a more bone-headed, tone-deaf choice for a running mate. I mean, listen to the woman! You betcha.

New Vision
In reading the comments of many of those that have written, I wonder if we really learned from the past few days, the past months, or even the past years. The success began confidently when Newt Gingrich touted the "Contract with America", however many have failed.

The largest failure is in pointing fingers at each other, because as the old saying goes when pointing a finger at someone else look carefully and you will see 3 pointing back at yourself.

Yes, the representatives, the senators, and even the president failed. We can all agree to this one item. Let us find the points that we agree upon and begin at that point. But beside the politicians failing, so did we. We became complacent, non-participating, silent in majority and we as conservatives allowed our representatives to stray away from the core theme of the Contract. We must join together now, we must look at the successes of the victor and develop a better plan to develop our united efforts toward a common goal. This, unity and common goals, is what made Newt Gingrich's Contract with America successful. Ask Vince Lombardi, how to build a winning champion and team. Marcel Proust said, "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes." We must view the core vaklues and view them with new eyes and develop a united effort of all the great organizations that are in support of issues that we can agree are of value.

I’ve been a reader of Townhall since its inception and have never posted until now because of the brazenness of Mr. DeLay’s column. What stones! Republicans were whipped because of ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS??!! Mr. DeLay, the reason the Republicans were whipped was because of YOU. YOU presided over a congress that engaged in an orgy of spending and government growth that outstripped Tip O’Neal’s wildest imagination. Thanks to YOU I can now lump the 2000s in with the 30s, 60s, and 70s, as the reason why we have a $10 trillion debt and a $40 trillion bill coming due in another 20 years for which there is not a single penny anywhere to pay for. Come hell or high water the Republican’s have always been able to claim, if not the mantle of fiscal responsibility, at least some semblance of fiscal sanity, and exercise leadership on the issue. Thanks to YOU and your congress we embarked on an effort to spend the U.S. into oblivion and lost that claim (as opposed to the Dems who want to tax and spend us into oblivion). That’s why we got whipped in ’04, ’08, and if we don’t get our act together on this issue we’ll get whipped again in ’10 and ’12. And when I say get our act together I mean a real plan of fundamental reform, decisive action, and the leadership to sell it to the American public, to fix the entitlement and budget disaster coming around the corner that will make what’s happening now look like chump change.

It worked so well, the libs just used a lot of humor from then on. Sure, the Obama camp ran those dry, serious ads all through the campaign. But around them swirled a host of humorous and sarcastic commentary, including Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert on Comedy Central, and Keith Olbermann and later Rachel Maddow on MSNBC, to name but a few.

[Vindex writes: TopGun writes: "He will brainwash his sheep into believing the previous administration had sunk the ship he was given and he could not patch the holes in the hull fast enough."

Isn't that what WE just did and still do?]

No. We, as Conservatives, are always looking to the future to allow the citizenry the opportunity to prosper and participate in making our country successful byway of following the Constitution, not trying to destroying it. We do not have time to look in the rearview mirror 100% of the time, as the Communists are always showing us, and using their Communist friends in the media to brainwash the electorate who are incapable of thinking for themselves or conducting research to find the truths.

[Wasn't that the talking point of the entire last 8 years?]

No. I thought the talking points were defending the second amendment, low taxes, self-government, self-responsibility, small government, freedom, preservation of our rights and opportunity to become anything you so desired.

What were you listening to?

[The problem is the public doesn't believe us anymore.]

The problem is the public allows the media, who is the tool of the DNC, to replace their brain with the ideology of Communism being they have become lazy, wanting free handouts and not interested in what is really happening to their country.

[And if you are honest with yourself, can we blame them?]

Can I blame the uneducated and lazy public for allowing themselves to become non-participating citizens you mean and allowing the Communists to take over this country with all their unconstitutional plans and assaults against our freedoms? Sure I can.

[And before you rattle off some nonsense defense of our party; remember, the election is over.]

When did stating facts become rattling? The election is over? Really? Go tell that to the Communists who continue their assault through the media.

I will always defend what my party platform stands for, freedom and Judeo-Christian values. That is never nonsense. Are your freedoms nonsense?

I disagree. It is time for this nation to conduct some soul searching or we will have no freedoms.

because they were no longer conservative, and there was little difference in the message being put forth. McCain and other RINOs believe that if they are moderate, dems and independents will vote for them. Why would those people not just vote for the democrats? Reagan democrats were not moderates, they were conservatives and Reagan didn't" liberal down " his message. Republicans in 1994 did not act like liberals and Bush always put forth a conservative message, even though he did not always follow it. The truth is that the country is still right of center. have proven they know nothing about conservatism.

Nevertheless, Republicans lost because they've been p*ssies (compassionate "conservatives") for 8 years. The Dems are at war and the GOP aristocrisy wants to play Risk instead of having a snowball fight. Brass buckles, starched uniforms, and muskets are no match for jungle camo and AK-47's.

Conservatives want to engage the enemy, Republicans don't even know an enemy exists. Republicans are afraid that the snow will make their hands cold, or that one snowball might bloody a nose. Well, the last snowball the Dems threw had rocks and ice in it, and it hit the GOP directly in the nose. How does it feel Rockefellers?

BTW, hearts and minds aren't won at the ballot box, they're won at the idiot box. A less-than-overt television campaign must be waged continuously, not just during election years. Thirty-second spots during Oprah, or The View, or on Comedy Central, or BET with well-crafted, targeted messages is the only way to counter what they say during the programs.

For instance, a commercial on BET could talk about vouchers. One during The View could be about helping Latin American children so that their parents don't feel the need to abandon them to immigrate to the US. One during Oprah could advertise a book by a conservative author.

There's no need for vitriol, of which I'm admittedly prone, but there is a need to recognize that the Dems are at war and that they have one heck of a propaganda machine.

Thanks.

I contend that the vast majority of self-described liberals are actually conservatives. I asked a very good, advanced-degreed liberal friend which is preferable, self-sufficiency or dependancy. She thought for a second then said, "self-sufficiency".

I then asked, "Should government policies promote self-sufficiency?" She said yes.

Finally I asked, "Does giving someone something they didn't work for and earn promote self-sufficiency or dependency?" Her face reddened when she said, "dependency".

There are myriad ways to promote conservatism without being bombastic. The GOP elite however believe that only through compromise can the party appear appealing to the middle. The only conclusion a fellow like me can make is that the GOP leadership is essentially unprincipled deadheads.

Have you ever been to a big city? Ever seen a demented person in ragged clothing who is rambling and shouting something as they walk? If you havent, well maybe you’ve seen this on tv; Is your first reaction to ask them about financial advice? Ask them where your kids should go to college? Ask them to comb your hair with their comb? No, what is the reaction? You want to get far away from them, and no they do not have any right to be trusted. This is the picture of conservatives in the big city of political life and republicans say get the hell out of here. Its not ALL conservatives but it symbolizes the problem WITH conservatives. Demented, misplaced, deluded, mistaken and energized to never change and motivated to angrily attack anyone who points out their flaws.

Hmmm, why aren’t the conservatives in power? It goes without saying.

godless unAmerican conservatives 2 blame
Redlac, I think you mean to write the intangible ‘principle’ not the pronoun Principal.

You said: “Therefore, what led the Republican Party to this day was not the application of conservative principles but the abandonment of those principles while hypocritically appealing to those tenets.

No, this is not only FALSE, but shows how conservatives are SO WRONG and refuse to see or correct their error. The hypocrisy is saying we conservatives know best, whatever whim we imagine? It’s the absolute truth. And who sounds like democrats but conservatives who since 2005 have openly pronounced that telling lies is perfectly fine. Conservatives NEED to tell lies and misrepresent things because they don’t have the substance to prove their case; Interestingly, it shows conservatives also don’t have honesty, values, loyalty; and it shows conservatives are now a group that actively HATES God and rejects the Christian part of American culture. So it figures conservatives hate republicans and our views on the authentic original America.

When Harriet Miers was named? Conservatives wanted to kill her because she is such a devoted Christian; When Mitt Romney was in consideration conservatives got reminded hey the LDS church is NOT compatible with biblical Christianity! Conservatives said we don’t care, in fact to hell with you Christians, we demand Romney!

Aside from conservatives who split away from the GOP and from America, conservatives hate God and hate telling the truth; they sat on their hands again in 2008 and didn’t vote GOP so they could sink the ship as they threatened years ago

Who likes the tv show called 24?
That stupid show on the Fox network may also have sent democrats to power.

Ive got a theory, that show appeals to far right conservatives (and birds of a feather). It seems to have the effect that conservatives think the show is so real, the threat is so bad that we cannot waste time trying to look at facts, we need to attack and destroy things all around us, its the only way.

Mexicans? they are all part of the plot to overthrow the USA, they must all be punished and besides they are an inferior race incapable of having values, etc; and the govt is not doing anything to protect us so we must take the law into our own hands...

So I wonder, if you consider yourself one of those hate filled conservatives who blames the GOP for fill in the blank, (but probably didnt vote in 06 or 08), are you a big fan of the show 24?

We need to find the pattern of where conservatives have gone wrong and address it.

Foxnews should be taken off the air
Or at least punished for not showing Vice President Cheney give an outstanding speech today on Veterans Day. Foxnews needed to cover the latest Hollywood gossip on Veterans day instead of any Veterans day events...

This is a special Veterans Day because now America has a Marxist Socialist moving to the whitehouse taking power. We Americans honor all those brave soldiers who fought to defend freedom at home and in the world. I think its special because its the last one while we have a pro American President who cares about our Military.

And now we have a president elect who represents the mindset of tyranny, corruption and oppression, the mindset that causes the strife that causes war.

In 2008 we have big changes on the horizon, democrats who vowed to surrender in war fronts and give away gains and dishonor the price we paid, Obama who said in his book after 9/11 that he (Obama) would stand with muslims against America; now surrounding himself with the types we warned about;

What a shame that America does not have a President Cheney to take over in 2009.

Now that Obama's staff learns top secrets, that info is channeled to our enemies. If terrorists strike America again it is the conservatives' fault since you s.o.b.'s knew the risk but wanted to sink the GOP ship out of spite, conservatives refused to vote again knowing the dangers, its your fault.

Earth to Gene, come in?
quote "I'm sorry, but who was it who took us to war in Iraq?"

Im not sorry, and it was the former Saddam regime who took the actions that required going to war in Iraq.

After years of brainwashing by the liberal media telling you what an unfair war it is? The facts dont seem to matter to you Gene, instead you would take sides with the enemies of the USA just to mock an outstanding GOP President.

Im familiar with the liberal left talking points against the war, the question is how could any real American believe in them? Instead of just labelling all such people as traitors you get the benefit of doubt that it was a result of poor research skills and an overwhelming amount of anti American propaganda, a cornucopia of treasonist thinking presented by the mainstream liberal networks to lie about the events leading to 2003 and why the USA led a global coalition to remove the terrorist mass murderer Saddam from power.

You libs now take sides with Saddams murder and say that was your version of a great society? How can you claim to be coherent and even slightly educated on this issue and takes sides against the USA unless your sympathies are solidly with terrorists? Explain it.

What I mean to say is you libs take sides with the mindset Saddam had as a gangster thug, a psychotic mass murderer and a supporter and financier of terrorism who also used money from illegal sales of oil to fund chemical and bio weapons research.

You libs defend Saddam saying NO, he didnt do anything bad, ever, and there never were any WMDs in Iraq at any time!

Thats a classic one, but history tells you that during and after the FIRST gulf war Saddam was caught with stockpiles of wmd's that world nations worked to help cleanup. So to say there never were ANY? is a pinnacle of ignorance or a conspiracy to lie in order to carry out some attack upon the USA, which is it?

Or how about "Saddam wasn't a nice guy, BUT, thats no reason to go to war"

Who said it was the reason? UN resolution 1441 WAS the reason, why not try harder to understand reality?

Todays liberal democrat holds to the misinformation that the Iraq war was somehow a failure on America's part? If you hate America first, we can see how you would say that.

Can you explain yourself Gene? and explain that liberal mindset that seeks to hate America first by badmouthing the Iraq war?

Truth Time -- Grit Your Teeth; It Hurts
Brad -- I'd only reply that the Iraq war is probably the longest war we've fought in, and it's only because we did not commit ourselves to winning it with sufficient troops on the ground in the first place. General Shinseki had it right, but the jerks in power shot him down, mainly out of a fear that they'd have to raise taxes to get the job done.

If you're going to fight a goddam war, raise the goddam taxes and GET IT DONE.

And tell me I'm wrong.

Now, today, I still don't see taxes going up to pay for the war, so I say, get out of there, and the sooner the better.

If Obama is Muslim, like many here believe he is, he won't pull out and let the people of his religion be destroyed right?

Obama will make a deal with Iran, I mean sell us off for a price, sleep with the enemy.

Then once he is out of Iraq, and he knows he can't find Osama, no matter how the Libs think he will, he will focus on his own Militia, then Americans will get their first taste of a Dictator at the helm!

We need to take treason seriously
Gene you said "and it's only because we did not commit ourselves to winning it with sufficient troops on the ground in the first place. General Shinseki had it right, but "

Do you mean that in April 2003 there were not enough troops on the ground?

There were people showing up on liberal networks claiming to be experts on military affairs; the audience wasnt told some where hardcore democrats seeking to paint the war as a failure, regardless.

We know this as current events, the anti war theme, mantra etc is indelible. It can be fun and interesting to discuss the invasion strategy. What a person is entitled to is their opinion. What a person is NOT entitled to is their own set of facts. Truth be told and let the chips fall where they may.

If you said the Allied troops invading Iraq in 2003 didnt use firearms nor tanks. They were a musical marching band and Saddams royal guard surrendered or just went to sleep listening to the band. Then President Bush had a party on some aircraft carrier, he flew in on a hot air balloon, with fan fan dancers, ice cream and pin the tail on the donkey and called it music accomplished!

Would you think that sounded silly? wrong? If you paid attention to current events you would have lived thru it and sort of know that the above is not what happened. Right?

I think if an expert on military affairs takes the stage and spreads deliberate misinformation about my nations military, during wartime? this is not free speech but a drag race towards treason. Enlitigateify the person pronto.

The rest of us have to have the honesty and character to tell the truth about history. And THEN comment on it. Do you want to do that Gene? The guiding light is the truth.

Raise taxes = install communism
Gene, youre wrong to say raise taxes to fight the war. Isnt the idea to increase revenue of taxation? iow to get the most revenue possible related to taxes of the common people?

Taxes are too high when spending is out of control and revenue is wasted

Why dont you call for sacrafice of the luxury and fluff because of wartime? why dont you want all Americans to pull together for the war?

In todays economy raising taxes is income redistribution, a form of communism. Why? why, do you ask? is why what youre asking? Because if you accept the fact lowering taxes causes more revenue, then raising taxes causes less revenue. Then your goal is not tax revenue. What is the goal? raising taxes in 2009 means taking money from the rich and giving it to slackers for a political vote.

This is not the policy of free Americans, its the path to communism.

But wait, there's more! as a bonus the democrats want to punish America for having a Republican President, so increase taxes and make the nation suffer to generate hatred and resentment of the GOP and freedom.

Gene, if the US military was in battle locally and they approached your home and wanted to use it for a time, using all your food and taking needed supplies, what would you do? is your first call to the ACLU? do you sue them?

History
In the Middle Ages, if a king wanted to go to war, he'd go around his country and hit on all the rich folk (his loyal nobility) for money and the people to fight it.

Screw all this crap about revenue being increased when taxes are lower. If that were so we'd know it. It's counterintuitive, and that's because it just plain ain't so.

You wanna fight a war, then everybody suck it up and pay as you go. There's no other way. We did that in all previous wars. We sucked it up. Only this one, run by the neo-cons, is being fought with our grandchildren's money.

Can you tell I'm a deficit hawk... and a realist?

Unlike many of you apparently.

"

it is so, and it is common knowledge, Im not being sarcastic.

One similarity could be a gas engine, are you familiar with how a car's engine works? push on the gas and it speeds up? not necessarily, if you were in 4th gear at a standstill and pushed down on the gas the engine would... what? stall.

Our Gov Arnold has an excellent way to talk about socialism when he was in the military, the smaller soldiers were tasked with carrying much larger and heavier soldiers than themselves.

when the larger heavier soldiers carried the lighter soldiers? they could do something better, I forget how the story goes.

If there was 1 and only 1 tax? then maybe more % would give more revenue. But put too much tax burden on people in 2008 and the economy will what? Anyone? class? it will STALL.

One undeniable advantage resulting from the war is skill and training with the most advanced equipment.

I also dont buy the raise taxes mantra because no spending cuts are included, you democrats want to go on like there is no war. Why dont we issue ration coupons? Why dont Americans volunteer to help America win the war?

Because the left has cursed the war effort for political gain. Its bad enough we fight enemies, but people who are citizens fight against America by badmouthing the war and the reasons for the war?? how disgusting.

It's those ultra-greedy filthy rich who screwed up this nation, insisting we could fight this war on the cheap and, oh by the way, more tax breaks for the rich, please.

That's where the true disgust should be focused, not on the Dems for disliking an unnecessary war (that turned out to be fraudulently started).

Believe what you want, but do try to understand that what you believe is far from the truth.

I blame the collapse of fnma and fmac on democrats, since clearly democrats are at fault;

You are mixing ultra rich economic types with others who had opinions on the war? no.

Are you saying capitalism doesnt work because the wealthy are greedy? communism also doesnt work because those in power are greedy.

I think we should establish a form of slavery in the USA once again, Ive got a plan for what Im talking about, not the old slavery but slavery version 2.0
So dont think Im unfair, Im WAY fair. This proposed slavery v2 would help our economy and make people happy.

If someone owns a fine food joint and charges $100 per plate of five star slop and they get rich? good for them.

Why do you and the dems come along like zombies in the night wanting to take their money away? feed us! we are too lazy to do anything but moan and murmer and take what we find!

Why not want to have laws enforced against fraud? so big greedy companies are held accountable? what do you got against fairness?

war fraudulently started? Earth to Gene
quote: That's where the true disgust should be focused, not on the Dems for disliking an unnecessary war (that turned out to be fraudulently started).

Im getting the impression youve watched too much of the liberal network news programs and accepted the mantra of unnecessary war, etc.

the LAST thing you could call the Iraq war is fraudulently started. I say it should have started Dec 2002 and not wait until March 2003.

That was President Bush trying to exhaust more attempts to prevent war having a (brilliant well spoken) Secy of State whose loyalty in 2002 is now suspect in my opinion. The Bush admin went too far to appease the anti war types; They would NOT consider the facts then, and you Gene are not seeming to grasp them now, maybe its all the leftwing media bias youve absorbed. Im sorry.

Im so nice, Im willing to ask you to explain what you mean, fraudulently started? Maybe Im not getting something.

And yes I mean what I said, we now have combat trained soldiers and that makes them safer. I care about their safety and appreciate the sacrafice. If one thing is consistent in human existence its that there always have been wars. How arrogant to say in whatever year this is, WE are more virtuous, more honorable and wise than ancestors who were stupider and lived in black and white.

The USA was begun in war and terrorism from Islamic radicals, the founding fathers are greatly admired and respected and THEY believed in war.

One thing I dont understand is where you said the brave soldiers who died in combat died needlessly?

Explain what you mean by needlessly, is this a reference to a macro event or to a specific incident? Its tragic for one brave soldier to be lost in battle, its more than tragic if that loss is from something like friendly fire as a result of needless cause. Im guessing you mean the entire war itself was needless?

Fraud
Ron Suskind's new book, "The Way of the World" contains but one example of the fraud invilved in selling the Iraq War on an unsuspecting and trusting public. Here's his summary (divided into two posts):

What just happened? Evidence. A secret that has been judiciously kept for five years just spilled out. All of what follows is new, never reported in any way:

The Iraq Intelligence Chief, Tahir Jalil Habbush -- a man still carrying a $1 million reward for capture, the Jack of Diamonds in Bush's famous deck of wanted men -- has been America's secret source on Iraq. Starting in January of 2003, with Blair and Bush watching, his secret reports began to flow to officials on both sides of the Atlantic, saying that there were no WMD and that Hussein was acting so odd because of fear that the Iranians would find out he was a toothless tiger. The U.S. deep-sixed the intelligence report in February, "resettled" Habbush to a safe house in Jordan during the invasion and then paid him $5 million in what could only be considered hush money.

In the fall of 2003, after the world learned there were no WMD -- as Habbush had foretold -- the White House ordered the CIA to carry out a deception. The mission: create a handwritten letter, dated July, 2001, from Habbush to Saddam saying that Atta trained in Iraq before the attacks and the Saddam was buying yellow cake for Niger with help from a "small team from the al Qaeda organization." (continued in next post)
planet gene writes: Saturday, November, 15, 2008 11:42 AM
Fraud (Part II)
Suskind's summary continued from last post:

The mission was carried out, the letter was created, popped up in Baghdad, and roiled the global newcycles in December, 2003 (conning even venerable journalists like Tom Brokaw). The mission is a statutory violation of the charter of the CIA, and amendments added in 1991, prohibiting the CIA from conducting disinformation campaigns on U.S. soil.

So, here we go again: the administration is in full attack mode, calling me names, George Tenet is claiming he doesn't remember any such thing -- just like he couldn't remember "slam dunk" -- and reporters are scratching their heads. Everything in my book is on the record, with many sources. And so, we watch and wait...

[End of Suskind's own summary]

This didn't cause much of a stir in the public when it came out, probably because we all knew it was too late to do anything. We have to finish up this war.

Well, let's finish it up and get out of there. If every American contributed $20.00 we could do it, and probably show a little victory to boot. But American's stand there stupidly and shout: "No new taxes! No new taxes!" So I'm not holding my breath.

Espousing cutting taxes in this time of peril is the national equivalent of yelling fire in a crowded theater.
Brad writes: Sunday, November, 16, 2008 1:47 AM
Even if that happened...
When trying to explain what a group like the CIA has done secretly in wartime? yeah, sure.

But for the sake of argument if it happened as described? its too little too late, Saddam called for war with the USA and our allies. It was over.

UN resolution 1441 was "the thing". trying to claim some secret info leaked out or saying the CIA was involved in interference and misinformation?

Whats asinine in the line of thinking is that after 1991 where Saddams stockpiles were being cleaned up? wmd stockpiles that is, and inspectors were barred from certain guarded labs and palaces? and Iraq was losing billions of dollars because they were not cooperating in proving no wmds?

10 years of terrorism, wmd research and documented proof of yellow cake, it all ended with UNR1441.

To try and say oh, maybe they really didnt have wmd's after all? no, its done, even if they didnt? THE RISK WAS THERE!!

There only had to be DOUBT that its possible there were wmd's. war.

How you liberals can take sides with Saddam and want to defend him and his actions while cursing America, cursing the fact we set the Iraqi people free? what, you want them to go back to the genocide/mass graves? Is there ANY war anytime in history you think was worth fighting?

Would you have wanted to NOT blame Japan for Pearl Harbor in 1941? and to just give peace a chance? Or just let Hitler rule the world, America (and GB)is not worth defending? is that your view? I just want to know where youre coming from.

hardly. But that mindset loudest from the extreme fringe conservatives is part of the reason the GOP lost, because the far right wanted the GOP (Republican Party) to lose. The far right have preached their hatred of Christian values within the GOP to the point of stupidly saying all of the GOP is/are cowards, not conservatives, etc therefore they betrayed the GOP and must therefore be expelled.

Since 2005 the call by the far right has been to betray republicans in office, to let democrats have power so they can ruin America, that way they think the GOP will come running back to the far right to help fix everything?

No. The far right wing conservatives are traitors, disloyal to everything, the stupidity and hatred of America by the far right is not bound by education or intelligence. that means both the stupider people and even very professional far right crackpots are wrong.

Wrong about immigration reform, wrong about the NAU, wrong about twist style light bulbs (mercury scare) to show how energized in error/stupidity they can be.

What Tom Delay said...
I think of the many folks who must elaborate what we on the political right must do, Tom DeLay is certainly in the top tier.

These are useful and powerful words: "Between now and then, Republicans must come to terms with their organizational shortcomings and finally become again the kind of dynamic political party that won stirring victories in 1994 and 2000. Our party must expand its organization to include our coalition groups in the ways Democrats have with theirs."

What I read Toms post to say is that the Obama camp refused to be limited by financing, went public and out raised Team McCain by a virtual 56-3 football game blowout margin.

And the Obama folks were organized, doing what the GOP side 'USED' to do.

These are objective facts. Then Conservative groups are not unified. We need to devote some time to looking at how to unify. Im not going to stop complaining at far right conservatives, but can spent a bit of time on action items for improving the future.

But then I think Tom DeLay has expertise that few have, battling dishonest attacks by the left, how can we going forward paint the political left in such a way that gives a person the common sense feeling that what the left is doing is wrong?

A couple of flaws the left has is that they will lie then seek to move ahead like it didnt happen; and that they tend to be progressive centered, if they dont know what that means? higher ups assure them "you are, trust us". But thats at odds with fundamental beliefs of Founding Fathers. And how many know Colonial America was victimized by Islam based terrorist attacks in the 1700s? What happened, what approaches were tried and what worked?

Oh clueless one Gene,

When you support a Communist platform: redistribution of wealth, national healthcare and a ban on certain guns, that is known as a communist agenda, and if you vote for that agenda, it makes you a communist too for supporting such an agenda.

The problem here in this country is that people are too stupid to realize they are supporting a Communist agenda. That still does not mean they are not a Communist. Democrats voted for it whether they are intelligent enough to realize it or not. The vote makes them a member of that group who supports it.

All the babble about free market capitalism is just that -- babble. We'd all be a lot better off in the long run if we shipped all the CEOs over to Iraq and sent the Congress home for the holidays for good!

Money makes its own path, and it can cut through capitalism as easy as we've seen it cut through socialism and Communism. Look at China. They maintain that they are ideologically Communist while they practice a form of capitalism with rates of productivity that the United States can only dream of. And they've turned us into their number one consumer market.

I'm from Indiana, and we still have farmers on farm welfare programs from the last Great Depression! So now we pay Indiana farmers a welfare check with money borrowed from China NOT to grow crops here in the United States so that we can buy cheap food from China.

Money makes its own path.

Uneducated Stool Pigeon
*Just because you call a national health care system part of a communist agenda doesn't make it so. Or I guess the rest of the industrialized world is communist.* … cats cats

The rest of the world has socialism. What the heck do you think that is? Are you capable of thinking or educating yourself?

*Calling for the ban on certain weapons a part of the communist agenda doesn't make it so. The latest Supreme Court decision on this subject did not guarantee you the right to own any weapon. It only held that the government does not have the right to ban ownership of all weapons. You do not have the right to own a bazooka or an atomic weapon.*…cats cats

The first action all countries, who eventually turned Communist, had happen to them was the public being disarmed. Again, go educate yourself.

Where in the Second Amendment does it state what a citizen can and cannot own / have?

Second Amendment:
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

It says I have a right to bear ARMS. Do you know what ARMS covers? Obviously you do not. ARMS covers anything and everything you could / can use as a weapon to defend your country, yourself or to fight off a tyranny government, you know, the type you prefer.

I agree it should stop with atomic weapons, but everything else should be available to me by way of MY Constitutional rights. All gun / weapon limitation laws are unconstitutional.

*Go ahead, call me a communist.*…cats cats

I don not have to. You have already displayed your preference for Communism for everyone to see by displaying your preferred ideology and defending the Democrat / Communist platform.

Cats cats, you can always join the other party after educating yourself and learning the truths and be a proud American rather than an Enemy / Communist who is against your own country by not defending the Constitution.

Meanwhile, in Communist Germany...
and fill the halls to delve into long pieces of classical music. Why, they should bBrad writes, "Call it what you want, commumarxism or happy elf-ism, it's the same thing."

I just got back from a week in Munich, Germany, and Salzburg, Austria, and I gotta tell you: Somebody needs to go over there and tell those people not to be so happy, living in their obviously Marxist states! They flood the streets for their Christkindlmarkts e home, broke and watching television, like us Americans. How dare they act like socialized medicine is a good thing??? How dare they say no to wanton greed?

Somebody's gotta tell 'em!

Correction to Above
They flood the streets for their Christkindlmarkts. They fill their symphony halls to lose themselves in long pieces of classical music played by state-subsidized musicians. Why, they should be home, broke and watching television, like us Americans.
